Our solid timber doors are available in Blackbutt, Messmate and Recycled Messmate. Each Australian hardwood has its own colour, grain and natural features, so the timber you choose can have a big influence on the finished look of your door.
Blackbutt has a lighter, clean appearance, ranging from pale brown through to warmer tones with subtle pink undertones. Its distinctive grain and smaller gum veins make it a beautiful option for contemporary homes where you want the warmth of natural timber with subtle grain patterns.
Messmate wood is full of natural character, with colours ranging from pale cream through to warm brown and distinctive gum veins running through the grain. Every piece is different, making it a great choice if you want the natural features of Australian hardwood to be part of the design.
Recycled Messmate wood brings history and more variation than new Messmate timber. Along with the natural colour and gum features of Messmate, you may see nail holes, checking and other marks from the timber's previous life. These aren't hidden; they're part of what makes each recycled timber door unique.

Our solid timber doors are supplied raw, ready to be finished once installation is complete. We recommend waiting until after installation to apply the final finish, as doors can be marked or damaged during fitting. This means any small marks can be sanded out before the protective finish is applied.
Choosing a finish designed for exterior timber is important to help protect your door from moisture, UV exposure and the changing conditions it will experience throughout the year.
We recommend Osmo UV Protection Oil for our exterior timber doors. It penetrates into the timber rather than creating a film over the surface, allowing the natural grain and texture of the hardwood to remain visible while providing protection from the elements.
The finish will need to be maintained over time, with the frequency depending on how exposed your entrance is to sun and weather. One of the benefits of an oil finish is that it can be cleaned and recoated as required without needing to completely strip the door back first.
Every Bombora timber door is handcrafted to order in our Torquay workshop by our small team of furniture makers. From selecting and laying out the timber through to machining, joining and hand sanding, each door is made individually rather than coming from a production line.
We work with Australian hardwoods sourced through trusted local suppliers, including recycled Messmate that gives existing timber another life. Our workshop is powered by solar, and we aim to make the most of the timber we bring through our doors, with smaller offcuts used across other pieces wherever possible.

We source our Australian hardwoods through trusted local suppliers and also offer reclaimed timber options. Our Recycled Messmate gives existing Australian hardwood another life rather than relying on newly harvested timber.

If you're using pivot hinge hardware, this can be sent to our Torquay workshop before your door is made so we can rebate the door to suit.
Yes. Our solid timber doors can be made to suit a pivot hinge system. As we don't supply the hardware, you'll need to select and purchase your pivot system separately.

No, we don't offer an installation service. Your solid timber door will need to be installed by a qualified builder or carpenter.

Yes. Solid timber naturally expands and contracts in response to changes in temperature and humidity. This is normal and needs to be allowed for when the door is installed.
As a guide, a 1200mm wide solid timber door can move by up to approximately 10mm across its width over the course of the year. For this reason, it's important that your builder or carpenter allows for natural timber movement when fitting the door.
The horizontal pieces at the top and bottom of our doors are known as breadboards. They are an important part of the door's construction, helping to keep the solid timber boards aligned while still allowing for the natural expansion and contraction of the timber.
Because solid hardwood responds to changes in temperature and humidity, the breadboards are designed to accommodate this natural movement while helping the door maintain its structure over time.
